Liberatory Design builds on the legacy of best practices from fields like design thinking, complexity theory, organizing, equity, restorative healing and beyond. In situations as complex as equity challenges, the way forward is led by noticing, experimenting, learning, reflecting, and repeating. Liberatory Design is structured to build your equity leadership capacity to create real change with the communities you care deeply about. The process itself, as well as the outcomes, are building towards greater collective liberation. This trip became an explosive affirmation of my misgivings about our field. Who were we, as this U.S.-based university, to show up uninvited, mirroring colonial histories, to come and spread our “wisdom” of Design Thinking to locals, many of whom were active practitioners?

I returned to work, validated and fiercely dedicated to how to prevent this kind of extraction from happening again. Q: Tell me more about how this is different from the traditional design thinking approach.
The Obama Foundation sought an equity design partner to equip their youth leaders in the Community Leadership Corps to catalyze impactful community-led change in their neighborhoods in Chicago, IL and Hartford, CT. We want to see a world made of thriving communities where everyone has access to health, healing, love, growth, and every kind of wealth. A lot of this work is also tied to personal reflection, like exploring your own identities and power because they all come to play in our work. The NACC is a non-profit dedicated to advancing justice for children, youth, and families.
